Our ambition is that this scheme provides an example of how long-term investment can create a place that supports local people, businesses and visitors to the city – aligning with the vision for the Temple Quarter regeneration area and the One City Plan.
Temple Island will be a vibrant, mixed community for decades to come. Seeing the value in creating sustainable and inclusive communities, Legal & General will own the buildings developed on the site for the long term.
As a responsible investor, Legal & General was the first company to have adopted the social value charter on our developments, seeking to measure and maximise the social value generated in collaboration with Bristol City Council as the site owner. Legal & General will develop a social value strategy for the scheme that sets real and tangible targets for Temple Island.
Social Value Portal conducted a Local Needs Analysis to identify key needs and priorities for creating social value locally, and has since held two webinars (in November 2023 and February 2024) with local stakeholders aimed at identifying key principles and ambitions for the scheme.
Five principles have been identified:
- Prioritising community needs
- Contractualising social value commitments
- Supporting local community initiatives
- Promoting transparency and accountability
- Creating a place that leads by example in Bristol
The ambitions outline the priorities underpinning each theme:
Jobs: Collaborate across the city to improve skills and establish the site as a place of equal opportunity and fair work
Growth: Uplift local business through inclusive and sustainable opportunities
Social: Create a place that improves the physical and mental health of residents and workforce while caring for the surrounding community
Environment: Protect the natural environment around the site while improving air quality through sustainable transport
In the next stage, more detailed targets will be set in line with the principles and ambitions included above.
